I am very grateful to the Foundation as they have funded my continuing education for specialty pelvic health training. Over the last two years, the Foundation has covered the cost for five courses including hands-on skills for pelvic floor therapy and additional courses in pregnancy and postpartum care. In that time, I’ve been able to offer outpatient services for common conditions that include: pelvic pain, abdominal scar management, low back/hip pain, urinary/fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, pregnancy changes, labor and delivery preparation, postpartum recovery, and menopause changes. With my skills and our unique setting, I’m also able to see patients in the hospital after delivering their baby.
I’ve seen over 150 new patients for pelvic floor dysfunction in the outpatient setting. There are limited options for pelvic floor therapy in central Washington and I’ve had patients who travel an hour each way to receive care. I’m very proud and grateful I can offer this valuable service in our rural community.
In the years to come, I look forward to continuing to grow services related to pelvic health. I have (ambitious) plans to offer pregnancy and postpartum educational classes, hold support groups (miscarriage, pregnancy, postpartum, healthy aging, etc.), and continue presenting nationally at occupational therapy conferences and to other healthcare providers. There is a need for these services. I have the passion and drive to do it. I just need the time (and more people on my team)! I am working to collaborate with more like-minded people in our community to make these changes a reality.
