Wellness

You make healthy choices for your family, but it can be a challenge in today’s fast-paced world. We #neverstop promoting  pursuing collaborative partnerships, and initiating, sponsoring, or promoting local heathy activities.

Senior Living Initiative

The Senior Living Initiative (SLI) is a grassroots effort that is building a pathway of senior living and care in the Lake Chelan Valley.
The Lake Chelan Health & Wellness Foundation is a supporter of both these efforts.

There are two major SLI efforts currently underway:

Tender Loving Care for Seniors (TLC) Program offers periodic volunteer visitors at no fee, to assist seniors to live comfortably in their own home.

Activities might include:

  • Companionship
  • Support seniors to achieve goals for health and self-care
  • Connections to other services in the community as needed

The Tender Loving Care for Seniors (TLC) start-up nonprofit has been training volunteers to assist vulnerable seniors who wish to remain in their own homes and apartments. These non- medical visits include companionship/friendship, respite for senior’s caregivers, coordination of care such as connecting seniors to services such as home health, home repair and transportation. TLC works closely with Chelan Valley Community Nurse Michelle Jerome, Health Homes Nurse Coordinator Jill Milner, Chelan Valley Hope and others. TLC sponsored a May 2018 event where 9 local seniors had applications processed for Link Plus, a service which allows them to access low cost ($3 roundtrip) door-to-door transportation to medical appointments and shopping. TLC also is improving food security by assessing client’s needs and obtaining home-delivered meals or delivering food boxes to homebound clients.

TLC Coordinator Claudia Swenson has trained 27 volunteers (25 active) and assessed 37 clients for TLC care. Clients are fragile; we have had 4 deaths and 9 have become inactive due to a number of issues. In the first 7 months (October 1, 2017- April 30,2018), TLC provided 257 visits, 520 hrs of visits and traveled 2566 miles, about 10miles/visit. The Lake Chelan Health & Wellness Foundation has covered the cost of two volunteers for 2018. Our volunteers and clients really enjoy each other. Client/volunteer relationships are making a difference: one client’s clinical “depression score” went from severe daily symptoms to normal range; another client is getting help with computer and motorcycle issues besides having a new friend.

Families needing respite care are being supported by generous volunteers who may provide a 2-4 hour visit to allow the caregiver to run errands, shop or even continue to do a volunteer job they love. All client visits and client information is held confidentially.

2018 Shamrock Shuffle

The Lake Chelan Lions Club sponsored the 1st Annual Shamrock Shuffle Fun Run on Saturday, March 17, 2018. The effort came about from the Lions’ dedication to helping in the fight against diabetes.  Partnering this event on our valley’s favorite parade, the Wayne Kelly Memorial Top Dog Parade, the day is a great reminder of what small communities can do for the people who live here.  All are encouraged to participate by registering to walk or run.  Bring your family, your friends, and even your dog, on a leash of course, and let’s send some of our local students to camps in Washington State especially designed to help them enjoy life and manage their diabetes.  If you know of a student who would benefit from a camp like this, please contact the club for more information.

Lake Chelan Lions Club is proud to partner with our sponsor, Lake Chelan Health & Wellness Foundation.  Through a cash donation, LCHWF is making this event possible.  Together, we hope to encourage our valley to keep active, and put their health first through education and awareness.

Lions club international is the world’s largest service club organization with 1.36 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in 210 countries and geographic areas.  In addition to its efforts toward conquering sight and hearing needs as well as diabetes, the organization has made a strong commitment to community service and helping youth throughout the world.  For information, contact email lakechelanlions@gmail.com.  To find out what’s new, please “Like us” on Facebook/Lake Chelan Lions.
